ChatGPT and LLMs are eating the internet alive

Are Eating the Internet Alive As generative AI models rapidly mature, the very structure of the internet is being rewritten in real time.

The Handelot Times Issue 56, July 2025 5 min read

With each passing month, more of the web is being consumed — and in many cases, overwritten — by AI-generated content, summaries, and automated responses. For B2B leaders operating in media, search, platform governance, cybersecurity, and knowledge industries, this is not a distant threat but an urgent, unfolding reality.

1. AI summaries now dominate search results

The most visible manifestation of this shift is happening inside the world’s largest search platforms. Instead of directing users to original websites, search engines are increasingly surfacing AI-generated summaries right at the top of results — often absorbing knowledge from thousands of human-written pages without clear attribution. Tools like Google’s “AI Overviews,” Microsoft Copilot, and various productivity assistants now ingest enormous swaths of third-party content and distill them into neatly packaged paragraphs, heavily reducing click-through rates to the original content creators.

Example: A 2025 Reuters investigation uncovered serious quality control issues within these AI-generated summaries. In multiple cases, Google’s AI Overviews delivered incorrect answers based on misunderstood data pulled from satirical articles or low-credibility sources. In one widely cited error, the model confidently claimed, “None of Africa’s 54 countries start with K” — a factual error that remained visible to millions of users for hours before being corrected. This type of failure highlights how AI-generated results, while convenient, often bypass rigorous editorial verification.

2. LLMs are draining traffic from traditional sites

This AI-first shift is not just altering how users consume information—it is actively eroding web traffic for many long-standing content platforms. Publishers, Q&A forums, niche knowledge communities, and expert sites are seeing measurable audience declines as users turn directly to ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude for instant answers, skipping the search and browsing process entirely. Similarweb data now reports that ChatGPT alone attracts over 5.5 billion monthly visits, a figure that dwarfs most news outlets and even rivals global social media platforms.
