Favorable opinion of the EU Parliament on the Artificial Intelligence Act, a provision which for the first time establishes the new European rules on artificial intelligence.
Approved by the Justice and Internal Market commissions of the European Chamber with 84 votes in favour, 7 against and 12 abstentions, the text includes among the measures envisaged the total ban on the use of AI technologies for facial recognition in public places.
The purpose of the AiAct
The purpose of the provision is to ensure a human-centric and ethical development of AI in Europe, defining new rules on transparency and risk management. Through the amendments to the Commission’s proposal, MEPs intend to ensure that artificial intelligence systems are supervised by humans, that they are transparent, traceable, safe, non-discriminatory and that they respect the environment.
Another objective of the regulation is to outline a uniform definition for AI that is technologically neutral, so that it can be applied to current and future AI systems.
