For the fifth consecutive year, stanford

University, and more precisely the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), has produced the AI Index Report, a study that collects, analyzes and visualizes data relating to evolution artificial intelligence. The goal is to provide unbiased, strictly controlled and globally sourced data for politicians, researchers, executives, journalists and the general public, so as to develop a deeper understanding of the set of technologies and solutions we call AI.

The full report is available online for free in .pdf format, or on the page dedicated to the Index on the HAI website (Link: https://creativecommons.org/ licenses/by-nd/4.0/) Meanwhile, here are the main points that emerge from the research, highlighted by the authors themselves.

Private investment in AI has grown while the concentration of investments also increases. Private investment in AI in 2021 totaled a staggering $ 93.5 billion, or more than double the total private investment in 2020, while the number of new AI firms receiving funding continues to decline as from 1051 in 2019 and 762 in 2020 to only 746 companies in 2021. Another interesting figure is the growth in the value of individual investments: in 2020, there were 4 rounds of financing worth 500 million dollars or more, while in 2021 the number has risen to 15.

Although they do not seem to agree on practically anything, the United States and China collaborate very well when it comes to research on artificial intelligence: this is confirmed by the very high number of collaborations in publications on AI from 2010 to 2021, which are increase five times in 11. For comparison, the collaboration between the two countries produced 2.7 times more publications than that between the UK and China, the second highest on the list.
