2022 ended with the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the last of last year’s superhero films: as 2023 arrives, it’s time to turn our attention to the characters from Marvel and DC films whose release is scheduled for the new year.

With so many Marvel and DC films on the way there are sure to be a lot of extremely interesting characters to discover - some of whom we’ve spent time with before while we’ll be meeting the others for the first time as the new films release. So let’s look at the ones that are all likely to win over superhero movie fans in 2023.

1. Kang the Conqueror In 2021, during the Loki finale, Marvel Studios introduced the One Who Remains, a variant of the character played by Jonathan Majors: this year we will finally meet Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Obviously Majors will play Kang, but we already know that the actor will not just repeat the performance we have already seen thanks to the role of the one who remains. Quantummania director Peyton Reed said that Kang is a ‘very different character’ and that he is ‘someone who has dominion over time, a warrior and a strategist’. Why Kang is trapped in the Quantum Realm and what kind of deal he wants to get from Scott Lang hasn’t been revealed yet, but what is certain is that this will be a great first taste of the legendary villain.

2. Batman Everyone expected Michael Keaton’s Batman to light up 2022, but since The Flash has been pushed back to 2023, this will be the year the famous American actor returns as the Dark Knight. Unfortunately, as we know, Batgirl has been cancelled, as has Batman Beyond, and Keaton’s appearance in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is still up and running - as a result this may be the only time we’ll see the star return to wearing the batman suit. Either way, though it’s been more than 30 years since Batman Returns, fans are confident that Michael will be absolutely perfect for the part.
