How Project 2025 will affect game developers
In the last few weeks, you may have heard of a document known as “Project 2025.” Officially titled “The Project 2025 Presidential Transition Project,” it was created by The Heritage Foundation, a conservative nonprofit think tank.

The project’s aim is to establish policy goals for the next presidential administration under Donald Trump, along with the strategies to achieve them. The document was authored by political insiders, many of whom have past and present ties to the candidate.
While it is not uncommon for think tanks to release policy suggestions, the promotion of such a comprehensive plan by an external nonprofit organization is noteworthy. Despite this, the contents echo the policy platforms of Republican Party elected officials over the last two decades. The project aims to radically overhaul laws around taxes, LGBTQ+ rights, regulation, and more—policies that resemble the actions of previous administrations. Furthermore, as 501(c)(3) nonprofits are restricted from participating in political campaigns under IRS rules, some have raised concerns about whether the promotion of this project violates tax law.
Project 2025’S viral public scrutiny
What’s especially unusual is how rapidly Project 2025 has gone viral. Thanks to comedian John Oliver and particularly due to comments made by actor Taraji P. Henson, Americans are now closely examining how this plan could affect their daily lives. This scrutiny has spilled over into many areas of society, including the world of video game development.
As we looked deeper into Project 2025’s goals, it became clear that there are concerning implications for the gaming industry. The potential impacts include the threat of media censorship, worsening worker health and well-being, and significant setbacks in gender and racial equality—issues that the video game industry has long struggled to address.
