OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, has secured $6. 6 billion in its latest funding round, backed by key investors like Microsoft, signaling continued confidence in artificial intelligence (AI).
This deal places the company’s valuation at $157 billion (£118 billion), on par with financial giants like Goldman Sachs and surpassing many major U. S. corporations, making OpenAI one of the most valuable start-ups globally. The fresh capital will help OpenAI maintain its leadership in AI research. However, the company has been the subject of internal upheaval and debate regarding its direction. CEO Sam Altman is reportedly restructuring the company into a for-profit entity, moving away from its non-profit roots, which has caused friction among some staff and critics.
Among the critics is Elon Musk, co-founder of OpenAI, who left in 2018. He has expressed concerns that the company has drifted from its original mission to advance AI for the broader good of humanity.
OpenAI is recognized for bringing AI technologies like ChatGPT into mainstream use, sparking significant investment in the sector.
